39th Annual Gammel Dag Fest in Peterson, MN, Saturday June 22, 10 AM-Midnight

Experience a Scandinavian Midsummer Celebration on the longest day of the year!

Peterson, Minnesota:  WANNA GAMMELDAG? Come and spend a Saturday in Peterson, packed with activities for all ages.  The Friends of Peterson invite you to join us at a celebration rooted in history, community spirit, and finding fun in the simple things.

Gammel Dag (meaning “good ol’ days”) is our way to celebrate our heritage and share our community spirit.  Visit with talented artists who will be demonstrating Scandinavian folk arts, music, fashion and dance. Many of them will give you a hands-on opportunity to see if you are an undiscovered Scandinavian artist.  Enjoy traditional foods of Norway as well as the American fare we all love!

We also embrace our American heritage!  We kick off our celebration with a classic old-time parade and offer horse-drawn wagon rides, a kiddie train, quilt show, and our own version of bingo.  And what’s more American than a garage sale? A few of our locals will be open for business. In addition, the North Prairie “Hayseeds” have challenged the Decorah “Driftless Dodgers” to a vintage game using the rules of 19th century “base ball.”

This year we also celebrate the centennial of the 19th Amendment, the culmination of the women’s suffrage movement.  A traveling exhibit provided by the League of Women Voters will feature the history of how women gained the right to vote.  Suffragettes will join our parade and invite you to the exhibit at the Peterson Station Museum.

Gnome Fever has infected the community of Peterson.  We are a small town with two enormous gnomes! To celebrate our love of gnomes, we will have a boutique, scavenger hunt, and wisdom booth where you can learn “gnomisms.”  Don’t miss the Gnome Lore presentation at the bandstand where we will distinguish between the facts and fiction surrounding gnomes.

Gammel Dag is family-friendly!  Several events are free: bandstand entertainment, artist demonstrations, wagon rides, kiddie train, history exhibit, and scavenger hunt.  For minimal fees you may make a flower wreath crown, paint a t-shirt, or play candy bar bingo.

After all this activity, put the kids to bed and dance until the end of the longest day of the year with “Spare Parts Project” at the Peterson American Legion starting at 8 PM.  The $5 Gammel Dag button gets you admission to the dance and a chance to win $25, $50, or $100!
